What happens after we start
How a floor goes in, by the makers’ clock
Pick a floor. The timeline shows the waits the makers and standards build into a job, so you know when the room is yours again.
Hallmark holds the room at year-round conditions for at least a week before install.
NWFA wants permanent heating or air conditioning running 5 days before the boards are delivered.
NWFA’s rule: the wood subfloor is no more than 2% wetter than solid plank boards 3 in or wider, 4% for narrower strip.
Solid boards nail to a wood subfloor; engineered may glue down or float, as its guide allows.
A site-applied finish needs drying time when the floor cannot be walked on, per NWFA.
Mannington tests by ASTM F2170 or F1869 before a glue-down install.
Two-part epoxy adhesive where standing water is likely, per Mannington.
Mannington: minimize foot traffic for 24 hours.
Furniture on wheels and rolling loads wait 48 hours.
Minimal wet cleaning for the first 5 days.
Rust-Oleum: new concrete cures at least 28 days before coating.
Droplets or darkened concrete under the plastic mean a moisture blocker goes down first.
Rust-Oleum applies at a relative humidity no greater than 85%.
Then heavy items and normal traffic at 24 to 48 hours.
Cars go back in the garage after 3 days.
Tile for interior wet floors rates 0.42 wet DCOF or more under ANSI A326.3.
ANSI A108.02: 1/8 in over 10 ft for tile with an edge 15 in or longer, checked with a straightedge.
A framed floor under tile deflects no more than span divided by 360 (TCNA).
ANSI A108: 80% coverage in dry areas, 95% in wet and exterior areas.
Grout goes in after the mortar sets.
Mohawk: 35 to 65% RH and 60 to 85 F, kept for the life of the floor.
Mohawk strongly recommends a moisture test of the subfloor.
Nothing pins the floor: no glue, nails or screws, per Mohawk.
A 3/8 in gap on all sides so the floor can move.
Humidity and subfloor conditions stay in range for the life of the floor.
Times and limits as published by Hallmark, NWFA, Mannington, Rust-Oleum, Mohawk, ANSI and TCNA. Your job’s schedule is set at the estimate.
